Motivation

[edit]

There is a website devoted to collecting Erdős Problems and giving each a unique number. Recently there has also been an effort organised by Terence Tao to record the links between each of those problems and any integer sequence that is relevant to it. The system used for indexing the integer sequences is OEIS, which already exists in Wikidata as Property:P829. It would be helpful to that effort and to mathematicians generally if the links between sequences and problems could be explored using the tools that Wikidata makes available, and this could also be a useful test case for building other structures that help automate searches through the accumulated corpus of mathematical literature. (This proposal for an Erdős Problem number should not be confused with Property:P2021 which is the Erdős collaboration distance number.)

Discussion

[edit]

It's worth noting that, for example, Erdős Problem Number 11 is listed as being related to OEIS A001220, which is the sequence of Wieferich primes. The relevant Wikidata item is "Wieferich prime" (Q966601), and it includes A001220 as the relevant OEIS ID, under the Identifiers section. If this proposal is accepted, then Erdős Problem Number would be another available identifier, with a value of 11 in this case. I don't expect all Erdős Problems to already exist within Wikidata, and it may not be worth importing them all, but for any item in Wikidata which does have a relevant OEIS ID with an associated Erdős Problem, it would be valuable to be able to record that connection.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by ~2025-43552-15 (talk • contribs) at 2025-12-28T13:35:15 (UTC). --Tinker Bell 19:47, 28 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
