Save the date! WikidataCon returns 31 October - 2 November, 2025

[edit]

Hello all,

I am excited to announce the next edition of the WikidataCon, taking place over three days from 31st October to 2nd November, 2025.

Organised by Wikimedia Germany, this event celebrates the entire Wikidata Community in all of its aspects; editors, tool builders, patrollers, data reusers, members of GLAM and other organisations that use and contribute to Wikidata. This year, the event format will be an online-style conference with a full program that attendees can join and participate with content from anywhere in the world.

We also encourage local chapters and community user groups to organise in-person meetups alongside the event to bring people together and also celebrate Wikidata becoming a teenager for its 13th Birthday (October 29th).

What kind of sessions to expect at WikidataCon 2025?

  • Learn more about basic and advanced editing skills
  • Workshops, live-editing, games and discussions
  • Exchange tips and tricks with Wikidata experts
  • Discover community-built tools and gadgets
  • Hear about new WikiProjects and initiatives

In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be revealing more details on the program content, call for proposals, daily schedule, themes and program tracks. Please check the event pages regularly for updates.

Questions? Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the organisers at info@wikidatacon.org or by leaving a message on the event talk page.

Hope to see you all at WikidataCon 2025! Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 12:49, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

WikidataCon update - May 2025

[edit]

Hello all,

Here comes an update about WikidataCon 2025! As a reminder, this conference dedicated to the Wikidata community takes place from October 31 - November 2, 2025, the conference will take place entirely online and all sessions, presentations and workshops will be accessible through our remote event platform Pretalx.

We are also working a lot on the concept of the conference, the structure it could have, taking into account the challenge of the online format (conferencing software, tools, accessibility, time zones…) as well as the program and its main themes, of which we'd like to share below...

This year's WikidataCon Programme Tracks are:

  • The Future of Wikidata
    • From changes in AI, re-working Notability Policy, changes in the Query Service, how does Abstract Wikipedia fit in.
  • Lexemes and Languages
  • Linked Open Data Ecosystem
  • Reuse and Data Partnerships
  • Providing the World with High Quality Data
  • Other (your idea doesn't fit into any of the above? We still want to hear about it!)

Hopefully I will provide more information in the next few weeks but in the meantime, you can already start thinking about how you could contribute to WikidataCon 2025 based on the Track names above!

If you’re involved in a local group or chapter, you can also note down the date in your calendar, and start discussing with your group members about your possible involvement in the WikidataCon. We are very excited to onboard local organizers in the process, and we will definitely gather ideas and wishes in the next few months about how we can connect the local communities together during the online event, and what support we can provide to bring local events to a global scale.

Thanks for reading this update! If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to reach out to us by leaving a comment below or contacting infowikidatacon.org. For the WikidataCon 2025 organization team, - Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 11:37, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

WikidataCon 2025: Call for Proposals is now open!

[edit]

The Wikidata flagship event of the year, Wikidatacon 2025 is now open to receive your proposals!

This year we are celebrating the connections Wikidata promotes and creates, whether between Wikimedia Projects, WikiProjects, institutions and data reusers, across languages and communities. This year, we have 6 programme tracks waiting to receive your proposals.

The call for proposals is open until September 1st AoE. The 6 Tracks are:

  • The future of Wikidata
  • Lexemes and languages
  • Linked open data ecosystem
  • Reuse and data partnerships
  • Providing the world with high-quality data
  • Others (e.g. Linked Open Data/ Wikibase)

Submit here! : Pretalx: WikidataCon 2025

Looking forward to your proposals, thank you - Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 10:57, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Possible to see submissions?

[edit]

Is it possible to see what people have already submitted?

I do not see how in the pretalx event submission interface how to view other proposals.

I have ideas to submit that I expect other people will have, and I wanted to try to collaborate with others if possible. Thanks. Bluerasberry (talk) 21:16, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Following the suggestion below, there is now a page for sharing submissions in public. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 02:03, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Clarifying the submission deadline

[edit]

The post above by User:Danny Benjafield (WMDE) says "The call for proposals is open until September 1st AoE." but pretalx currently says "You can enter proposals until 2025-09-01 12:00 (Europe/Luxembourg)", which I think is 26h ahead of "September 1st AoE". Can you please clarify and adjust in the various places that indicate the deadline? Thanks! Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:19, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Daniel Mietchen, Pretalx has been adjusted to show September 02, 13:59 as a deadline, which I hope will cover any and all areas of the globe to submit in a September 1st time-window. Apologies for the confusion! I'll check the phrasing to reflect that "until the end of " instead of "until"- Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 07:40, 28 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Danny Benjafield (WMDE): What about the question above about where we can find the existing submissions? --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 13:17, 31 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Daniel Mietchen, I just spoke with Alan Ang who relayed yours and @Bluerasberry's wish for the submitted proposals. I will add them to the Program page in the next couple of hours. After conferring within the team, we made the decision not to publish the submitted Proposals without prior informing the submitters. Although, proposals can be shared by copying and pasting the link available in your edit Proposal page, like this example -Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 07:23, 1 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the review links are useful in principle but they can be more useful if shared systematically, for which there is now a dedicated page. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 02:05, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Review phase has ended, building the first Program and confirming Speakers

[edit]

Hello all,

We have completed the review phase of submitted proposals, and are now selecting sessions to build the first program schedule (we say 'first' as changes may still occur).

If you proposed a session, you should receive a mail in the coming days letting you know whether your session has been accepted, or not (we'd love to accept them all but there are simply too many).
If accepted, you'll be asked to confirm your attendance and the assigned timeslot. If the timing doesn't work, you'll be able to speak with us and we'll try to find a suitable alternative.

Questions? Feel free to reach out by writing to us at info@wikidatacon.org

WikidataCon 2025: First schedule released

[edit]

Hello everyone,

After much deliberating, we have finally released a first WikidataCon 2025 schedule: see it on Pretalx!

As a reminder, this Wikidata-focused event is an online-conference to take place on free conferencing software: Jitsi. Organised by Wikimedia Deutschland, WikidataCon 2025 will take place between 31 October ~ 2 November, 2025.

Program

As stated above, the first WikidataCon 2025 schedule has now been released. We call it the 'first' release, as changes may occur before or even during the event and we may need to replace or move sessions. Any further releases will be communicated both directly to the speakers and here.
On Pretalx, you can mark sessions as your favourites and view the content in translated languages (but please remember the session will be given in English).

Event

The event will take place online, with participants using a conferencing software (Jitsi) to join a room where sessions will take place. Access to the room-link is only provided with Event Registration using your Wiki-account. During the event, live-captioning software will automatically-translate English to a subset of languages (to be posted once our technical tests have been performed).

Registration

WikidataCon 2025 is free to join, you can register to the event and receive the access link by clicking this button below: Register for event

Registration will be open until the start of the event. Some useful information will be sent in the upcoming weeks to people who registered, including the link to the event platform (Jitsi) for online participants.

Questions ? Feel free to contact the organizing team by writing on this talk page or at info@wikidatacon.org.

On behalf of the WikidataCon 2025 team, thank you! - Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 12:07, 6 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Accepted WikidataCon session but not on the schedule

[edit]

Hi @Kris Litson (WMDE) @Laura Rubin (WMDE) @Alan Ang (WMDE) @Danny Benjafield (WMDE)! @Hiperterminal and I proposed a session called "Strengthening the Latin American public domain with Wikidata". The session was accepted and we confirmed our participation, but it is not listed on the WikidataCon schedule yet.

We would need to know the date and time of the session as soon as possible, since we need to coordinate among the various people from different countries who will be present at the panel.

The other question we have is that, on the application form, we selected that we prefer to conduct the session in Spanish. We would like to ask if this will be possible, or if it will be necessary to conduct it in English. In that case, we would also ask you to let us know in advance, as several people on the panel may need some time to prepare their interventions in English.

Thank you very much for your help and best regards. Pepe piton (talk) 20:24, 24 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hello everyone,

The event has concluded, with 28 sessions over 3 days and more than 30 speakers involved!

Do you want to catch up on the sessions? The full-day replay videos are here for you! You can find links to the daily program on YouTube and watch the recordings at your own pace. Videos for individual sessions will also be added there in the next weeks and also to Wikimedia Commons.

If you attended parts of the event, we’re interested in your feedback. Please take a few minutes to fill out the feedback form until December 1st, 2025, it will only take a few minutes.

You can also join the UX testing mailing list if you agree to be contacted by Wikimedia Deutschland’s UX team to try out and give feedback on upcoming Wikidata features. will continue next year, more details to be shared later. Thanks to all those who spoke, participated, chatted, helped support and organise this 2025 edition of WikidataCon, the next one will take place in 2027, see you there! - Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 16:11, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
