Coordinates

[edit]

Thank you for adding coordinates Wikidata items. However, the coordinates posted on Wikidata are sometimes shown on Wikipedia, whose Project:Manual of Style (Q4994848) requires rounding, lest they create false precision (Q3467464). In almost all cases, rounding to the arcsecond (Q829073) is the best practice. Using Geographic Names Information System (Q136736), which is notoriously inaccurate, as a data source is not good practice. Abductive (talk) 14:02, 18 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

If there is a source I use the coordinates provided, and there is sometimes a reason for the precision. Some sources provide both decimal and DMS and one is converted from the other (particularly where precision of GNIS and GNS coordinates has not been improved) and sometimes one will have false precision but when using QuickStatements decimal is the only option. There's no reason to prefer DMS over decimal degrees, and because DMS is converted to decimal and stored with longer strings of numbers it increases the size of data and causes false precision in the Wikidata query service. If Wikipedia requires rounding, or DMS is preferred for some articles or countries, that can be done in Wikipedia. GNIS is better than no coordinates in most cases (territories in the Pacific Ocean may be exceptions), and many have been improved in recent years. Strange merge

[edit]

Hi,

I'm curious: why did you merge Q96761545 with Abbey of Saint-Étienne, Caen (Q376932), it seems very strange. At least, I remove the aliases that were very wrong. I still think a deletion make more sense here.

The deletion request was on hold because of a link from another item. I found that was Abbaye-aux-hommes, Caen, France (Q96761487), a painting. I also checked for use in Commons or any other project but there was nothing. As it was only used in Q96761487 and was almost certainly created for that use, I merged it to the intended item. Ok, all good! Still strange - not sure how/why I missed the linked item - but legit, thank you. Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 15:18, 7 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Revert

Per Help:Sitelinks "Sitelinks are special links that contain a site and a page title, and go from individual items in Wikidata to pages on other Wikimedia sites." A redirect obviously isn't a page on Wikipedia. The article it redirects to doesn't even talk about the record label anyway. But even if it did, again, redirects aren't pages regardless. BTW, I'll also add this from the guideline in case you want to argue about what makes something a page "sitelinks are for linking items to standalone pages that already exist on Wikimedia sites. Wikidata sitelinks do not support anchors (links to a specific section of a page). Anchors are preceded by the "#" character on Wikimedia sites. For example, a sitelink for the item for The Beatles (Q1299) should only link to the Wikipedia page on The Beatles and not any sections of that page." --Adamant1 (talk) 01:55, 24 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Redirects could not be used as sitelinks at first but it was changed: Wikidata:Sitelinks to redirects. A redirect does not contribute to notability, but can be useful if there are non-redirect sitelinks (the main purpose of allowing redirects), or if an item is used as the value of a statement in another item that has a sitelink. Peter James (talk) 08:08, 24 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
OK. I wasn't aware that the policy had changed. At least they don't go towards notability. --Adamant1 (talk) 04:06, 11 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Q400056

[edit]

FYI: The village Kurukaymak does not exist anymore on the ground, only ruins are left over since some years ago military forces raided the village because of anti-terror politics against the PKK. Nonetheless it may still exist as an administrative division which may become alive again after this year's peace negotiations. Its name is also viewable on the following .gov.tr map of Tunceli province: [1] so in my eyes it may be to early to delete even the Turkish name. --Katpatuka (talk) 10:44, 19 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

tr:Kurukaymak, Hozat is Q20610848. If Q400056 is the same place, the items should be merged or one marked as a duplicate. Peter James (talk) 16:40, 19 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ha! I see - sorry, didn't notice that Q20610848 exists. Difficult to merge though: coordinates of both items are the same but Kurdish names (diq and ku) differ - presumable some hamlets under administration of the village - a user knowing the Kurdish names could find a solution...
