Wikidata:How to create Wikidata Tours
Wikidata:Tours are short interactive lessons which show people how Wikidata works including concepts and functions and how to do specific tasks like adding data to different kinds of items e.g people. Wikidata Tours help people gain new skills and help grow the Wikidata community, both for new people to Wikimedia and Wikimedians new to Wikidata. Each tour takes between 5 to 10 minutes to complete, a list of tours are available at Wikidata:Tours. Please suggest tours you would like to see available in the table below.
Parts
[edit]A Wikidata Tour consists of the following parts:
- A wiki page where all text in the tour is stored that anyone can edit, no technical knowledge is required to create and improve these pages.
- A JavaScript page which stores data about the tour including a unique name of the tour, wiki page name, base Wikidata item to load and the startup data for base item as well as data and behaviour for each step.
- Tour item is a dedicated Wikidata item for the tour, the item is not used for anything else.
Working together to create tours
[edit]Many skills are needed to create a tour which will mean working with others. Each step will explain which skills are required, but the general workflow starts with content creation then gradually moves towards more technical tasks. These can be broadly divided into two required skills:
- Content creation - Designing and writing the tour content.
- JavaScript configuration - Tour setup and configuration.
Content creation
[edit]Writing the instructions for the tour requires you to know how to edit a wiki page. For basic tours this step can be completed entirely in the visual editor, but most tours are greatly enhanced by using appropriate templates, images and other content that require more advanced knowledge of Wiki text. Ideally someone with experience writing instructions should complete this step, or offer some guidance and feedback on the plan. Note: If you are planning to write a tour for an event or campaign please give yourself at least a week between write the tour and it being published.
JavaScript configuration
[edit]Basic knowledge of JavaScript and CSS is required in order to complete the JavaScript configuration file for a tour. You will also need the help of an Interface Administrators to deploy a tour for testing or final publishing, as the configuration file needs to be saved in a location that normal user accounts cannot write to (the "MediaWiki namespace"). This will be fully explained once you reach the JavaScript step, but you can use this list of Interface Administrators to find someone to help at an earlier stage if you're concerned about having to wait for responses.
Tours in progress
[edit]Many skills are needed to create tours so contributors should work together to create them. If you would like to learn about an aspect of Wikidata that doesn't have a tour you can add it to the table below. If you know of any existing resources that could be turned into a tour please add them in the notes section of the relevant tour.
