| The following is a working draft of a proposed Wikidata policy, guideline, or process. The proposal is definitely still in development and under discussion, and has not yet reached the process of gathering consensus for adoption. Thus references or links to this page should not describe it as "policy", nor even as a proposal. |
| This page in a nutshell: The ability to view the IP addresses used by temporary accounts can be granted to non-admins who meet certain criteria. This tool is only for combatting policy violations and each use is logged. |
Temporary account IP viewers (TAIV) are users who may view IP addresses associated with temporary accounts. When using the temporary account IP access tool users must follow the Wikimedia Foundation Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
Access to temporary account IP address information is logged. This log is viewable by CheckUsers only.
Requesting permission
[edit]Temporary account IP viewer permission may be requested at Wikidata:Requests for permissions: Requests for temporary account IP viewer flag. Users must nominate themselves; nominating somebody else is not permitted.
Administrators may add the temporary account IP viewer flag to the accounts of users who:
- Make a request for the permission;[note 1]
- Have had a registered account for six months;[note 1]
- Have made at least 500 edits to Wikidata;[note 2]
- Hold the rollbacker permission on Wikidata; and
- Agree to use the IP address information in accordance with Wikimedia Foundation policy, solely for the investigation or prevention of vandalism, abuse, or other violations of Wikimedia Foundation or Wikidata policies, and understand the risks and responsibilities associated with this privilege.[note 1]
Wikidata administrators, bureaucrats, CheckUsers, oversighters and certain global user groups automatically have access to temporary account IP information, meaning that they do not need the local temporary account IP viewer flag.
Once the permission is granted, editors must visit their preferences and enable "Turn on the ability to display IP addresses of temporary accounts" on the User profile tab.
Removing the permission
[edit]Admins are permitted to remove the temporary account IP viewer permission for misuse of the right, including the disclosure of temporary account IP addresses in violation of the Wikimedia Foundation Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
The access right will be removed if the user has not made an edit or taken a logged action within a 365-day period.
