Wikidata:WikiProject Wiki-PR Puerto Rican Cultural Heritage

From Wikidata

Background

[edit]

This project page serves as a central hub for various initiatives highlighting Puerto Ricans and Puerto Rican culture in Wikidata. Some of these initiatives include introducing Wikidata into cataloging workflows in the Library System of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus; describing GLAMs and their collections; and supporting decolonial efforts in linked open data creation in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Goals

[edit]
  • Increase the visibility of Puerto Rican culture in Wikidata.
  • Use Wikidata as a way to involve cataloging librarians, particularly assistant librarians, in the process of creating entries for Puerto Ricans as an alternative to traditional authority control.
  • Introduce Wikidata in current digital humanities initiatives that work with community organizations.
  • Increase community participation in Wikidata.
  • Highlight linked data creation as a cultural and political practice, in which the power to name is at stake.
  • Sustain a wider discussion of the pros and cons of representing knowledge as structured data in open databases. For example, discussing how to represent the complexities of the Caribean in terms of colonial power relations, language diversity, diasporic relations or citizenship.

Tasks

[edit]
  • Create and edit items for significant people, institutions, and community-based organizations in the Puerto Rican cultural ecosystem.
  • Create and edit items for archival collections in Puerto Rican institutions, including special collections in libraries and in community organizations.
  • Create and edit items for holdings in collections across GLAMs in Puerto Rico.
